| How the Bronco stadium renovation will affect you this season |
Bronco Stadium will be a construction zone throughout this season as crews work on the $35.9 million luxury suites/club seats/press box/concourse addition to the west side of the stadium. Here's what to expect:
Fans who sit on the west side of Bronco Stadium will face a season full of portable restrooms (school officials promise at least as many stalls as were lost) and concession stands because the old concourse was demolished to make room for the expansion. Services will be spread across the ground level, concourse level and in the end zones. Additional walking vendors should cut down on fans' trips to the concession stands. The upside? The expansion includes a renovated concourse that will feature five new concession stands, a novelty stand and about 135 restroom stalls ¡ª more than tripling the current supply. The ground level will include a ticket office and permanent Bronco Shop. Fans will enter the west side of the stadium through or around the construction yard this season. They will take stairs to the concourse level instead of a ramp, which won't be ready until next year. The stadium won't have an elevator this year, either, so fans who usually ride the elevator to the University Club will have to walk. Boise State built a temporary wooden press box after ripping down the old press box. It's nothing fancy ¡ª neither was the original press box ¡ª but it was painted blue so that it doesn't stand out. The top row of seats on the west side of the stadium is closed this season. The four blocks of lights that were mounted on the west side of the stadium in years past have been grouped together above the press box. The lights will be aimed in various directions to cover the field. Boise State hopes to have enough light that ESPN will not need to use portable lighting for the games it broadcasts. The construction zone outside Bronco Stadium ate up 170 parking spaces. The school regained 40 of those spots by moving the large RVs to the road along the Boise River. The Bronco Athletic Association has sold all of the parking spaces in the west and east Bronco Stadium lots, along Bronco Circle and in the grass field north of the stadium. The entrance to the parking lot by the Student Union Building will be closed this season because of construction on the SUB. A new parking garage at the corner of University and Lincoln will be at least partially open for the season opener. Parking passes there cost $125 for the season and are available through the BAA (426-1353). Fans with BAA permits can park in a large lot behind the student recreation center. Parking for the general public will vary based on the game day. The best parking is in the garage on the west side of campus. |
